The 6 Best January Holiday Destinations for Kids

With all the excitement in the run up to Christmas, it’s easy to forget that the long Winter months are looming. The wrapping paper is in the bin, the last of the turkey has been boiled into soup and only those horrible coconutty sweets are left in the Christmas sweetie tin (well, in our family anyway). The kids are bored, there’s a year of work ahead…and the cure? A short break away!

Luckily there are plenty of great places here in the U.K. to head off to with the kids – here’s a selection of favourite child-friendly destinations to think about trying:

Slotting in a short break before the kids go back to school means you could still catch the Gardens of Light, which run until the 4th January. This is the magical transformation of some of Bournemouth’s lower garden beach huts into interactive Light Pods. As a free spectacle, it’s well worth a trip to the South Coast for some Winter fun.

With the Blue Planet Aquarium, an award-winning zoo and lots of historic activities there is plenty for the children to see and do in Chester. There is also a Narnia exhibition at the Cathedral until 6th January; and if you’re quick you can go and see the Pantomime too, which runs until 4th January. Chester offers a brilliant blend of entertainment and education.

Alton Towers

(He didn’t). Currently they’ve got some excellent short break options for families, staying in one of the park’s hotels and enjoying all the facilities. Special Festive breaks run until 4th January to ensure getting the most out of the Christmas holidays, and of course there is the new CBeebies land to check out too.

Center Parcs

This was our go to family holiday every year when I was growing up and as an adult now I can appreciate why – there is something for everyone. Adults can enjoy the luxurious spa, kids  can take part in both indoor and outdoor adventure activities; and everyone can enjoy the subtropical swimming paradise under the dome. There are five different Center Parcs resorts across the U.K. with indoor heated space nestled in the middle of thick forestry full of friendly wildlife – a great option for a getaway.

For the kids, there is the zoo, Our Dynamic Earth and indoor climbing. And don’t forget the haggis, neeps and tatties too – warming food on a chilly day.

Water World

Or, as the Wee Man calls it ‘dooper DOOPER pool’. Basically it’s the country’s best indoor tropical water park – you can forget about the ice and snow outside and treat the kids to a fun-filled day. Water World in North Staffordshire boasts fantastic slides, pools and enjoyment for all the family. Plus it’s pretty close to Alton Towers – so to make it a really fun getaway you could combine the two!shutterstock_146681711
