Q is for Quaky Cat
The Wee Man and Bubby D are often sent books by the New Zealand half of the family – and one of their recent favourites is Quaky Cat.
It’s interesting because here in the U.K., we don’t really get earthquakes – so explaining to a three year old what one is and what happens is quite interesting. Especially since I’ve never experienced one myself.
But that’s what Quaky Cat is all about. After the earthquake which hit Christchurch two years ago (which is where the Other Half is from) Diana Noonan wrote this book about a cat called Tiger who experiences the earthquake, runs away in fright, loses his owner, Emma, and then finally finds her again after searching throughout the chaos.
The illustrations are bright and bold, and Tiger brings the story of both sadness and strength to life throughout the pages of the book.
I can imagine that it’s a great book for children who experienced the earthquake themselves, to help try and understand what happened – and equally the Wee Man and Bubby D enjoy it too, giving them a bit of insight into the effect on the lives of their family half way around the world.
