A night on the town

In the last four years, I can pretty much count on one hand the amount of times that the Other Half and I have been out for an evening, at the same time, together.

And the number of times that we’ve been out with together with other people present is even less.

Add to that the fact that the other people don’t have kids…well that’s pretty much not happened at all.

So it came as a bit of a shock to the system that exactly that was the plan for this Friday night.

Normally, for this kind of momentous evening out I’d not be too concerned about what I was going to wear, as we’d be with other tired parents, who are just so happy to be getting out of the house that they don’t particularly care if their clothes are a little bit scruffy.

But this time round, I thought perhaps I’d make an effort at what I believe is known as ‘smart casual’ – a concept that is interpreted in many different ways by different people. anyway, I see it as requiring smart jeans, shoes of some description, and a nice top.

Only problem is…the jeans I most frequently wear (despite Bubby D being nearly 21 months old) are actually still my maternity jeans (they’re just so comfortable though…). And I’ve always found that finding jeans for women that fit is a really ridiculously difficult task. Mainly because they mostly seem to be made for drainpipes of some description. Something which I bear very little resemblance to, with my swollen knees, short legs and kind of sticky out bottom.

So it was with great trepidation that I hit the shops, with an extremely limited budget, and very little time to find something that fit.

And amazingly, I did! Jeans were procured for the bargain price of £10, a lovely flowy top and a vest underneath and I was ready to go out and sample the culinary delights of a food establishment that was quite a lot more upmarket than our usual ‘it does red pasta’ haunts. Even better, even without the stretchy stomach expanding band around my jeans, I still managed to shovel in quite a lot of food, wine, and even a cocktail.

I reckon I could get to like this going out thing! Fingers crossed it wont be 4 years til next time…
