Speaking squawk – the Ordinary Moments

The Wee Man has decided it’s about time he became bilingual. He knows a bit of French (comment t’appelle tu?) and a bit of Spanish (aribba up! Abaho down! SALTA!).

But more recently, he’s been keen on speaking squawk.

In case you’re wondering what that is, let me enlighten you.

It consists of walking up to people (often, leaning up against them in an irritating manner) and then making loud, unintelligible and monosyllabic noises. Sometimes accompanied by a grimace like toothy facial expression.

This is particularly the case if you happen to be a harassed seeming parent, or a younger sister.

Aaaaaaaaaak! Mooooooooop! Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa….

It’s a fairly easy language to learn, and there is no consistency to what sounds mean. Other than the universal ‘I’m a bit bored, it’s the holidays, I’ve had more sugar than usual and I know this will annoy pretty much EVERYONE’ undertone, of course.

I’m all for bilingualism (if that’s a word) but I reckon we are better off encouraging the expansion of the French or Spanish vocabulary. It’s a lot less painful on the ears.

Hopefully, with his return to school tomorrow, the Wee Man will agree.

Et ma sange est sur la branche.

Or something.

Perhaps I would have been better off learning squawk at school too.
