First Haircut

Hair and toddlers do not mix.

It’s a repository for gooey pasta sauce.

It’s something to pull when attached to other children.

But it is definitely, DEFINITELY NOT something that should be cut. EVER. Or so my two year old tells me, anyway.

So I reminder her about how her big brother got a lollipop in exchange for shorter hair. Turns out if there is a lollipop involved, that changes things.

So, with iPad in hand (potential distraction technique), CBeebies magazine clutched in small two year old hand (another distraction technique), and discussion about all the different colours and types of lollipops there are in the world on constant repeat (bribery technique) I run up the road with her balanced on my hip, all the way to the hairdresser.

I have to say, it’s been a bit of a weird decision for me too. I remember when the Wee Man got his hair cut, and suddenly he wasn’t my baby any more – he looked so much more grown up. It feels kind of strange, making the decision to do away with that soft, wavy baby hair.

So as soon as we both got our heads around the decision I wanted to act on it as soon as possible.

The hairdressers were great. They had a little booster cushion so she could sit in the same chair that adults sit on (not that she’s ever seen me get a haircut – I haven’t had one for two years!). They gave her a pink gown to wear with friendly hairdressing dogs all over it. And of course, they gave her a lollipop.

She was intrigued by the whole experience, and very happy with the result. I can’t say it looks that much difference if I’m honest – it turns out a haircut for a girl isn’t so drastically altering as it is for a boy. But she’s happy with how it turned out, and that’s the main thing.

Now to tackle the ‘putting hair bobbles in, and leaving them where they are’ issue. I think that might take a little bit more time…
