New Beep
Microwaves don’t last very long in this house.
It’s not like we mistreat them. We don’t fill them with grapes, or eggs, or chicken legs for fun. We don’t lob in a teaspoon just to see what happens.*
In fact, the life of a microwave in this house is very mundane.
Defrost.
Reheat.
Ready brek.
That’s pretty much it.
Once, I did make a 5 minute mug cake. That was quite entertaining, and for the microwave, I’m sure it provided an unusual 5 minutes of excitement!
But in any case, even though our microwaves are used with respect, they just keep on breaking.
The last one tricked us a bit. It lit up, it made the noise, the little glass plate went round and round. But the milk stayed cold, the ready brek stayed gloopy, and no heat was to be had.
So, it sat there dormant for months. I missed it when I wanted a quick potato, or a method of defrosting not requiring a couple of hours and a sink full of warm water; and I did burn myself a lot more on hot pans of beans.
But we couldn’t really justify a new one. Until, yesterday, we found one drastically reduced.
The Wee Man was massively excited.
NEW BEEP. NEW BEEP!!!
Turns out, he remembers well the demise of the previous microwave.
‘We can go to the dump mummy, we’ll take the old beep and put it in the yellow beep container, and then the new beep will work and we can have warm custard!’
Oh the excitement. He couldn’t wait to get it out of the box.
We even had to buy a carton of custard, in honour of its unveiling.
I’m glad the Wee Man is happy.
Let’s hope this ‘beep’ stays happy too…
*all of these things MAY have happened to unfortunate microwaves in my younger years. But they were obviously far more robust, since they just kept on going.
