Bubby D is a Guinness World Record breaker!
Well…along with 8301 other babies and toddlers she is, anyway!

On Saturday 20th April 2013, we headed to the Bluewater Baby and Toddler Show to take part in the Great Cloth Diaper Change 2013 – an attempt to get the most simultaneous reusable nappy changes ever, across the world. The Other Half was just a bit disparaging when I told him what we were up to, since the 25 mums, dads, babies and toddlers gathering together in Bluewater did sound like quite a puny amount. But given that we were joined by 182 other sites from 15 countries and 5 continents around the world all busy changing nappies at 11 o’clock, actually it suddenly doesn’t seem quite so insignificant.

Not only was it a great chance to get Bubby D’s name in the record books and visit the Baby and Toddler Show, but it also gave us a bit of a push to start using the reusable nappies again that have been sitting around forlornly in our bathroom. We don’t have much drying space (or space generally!) in our house, we don’t own a washer dryer (although I’m assured we’ll have one by next year, fingers crossed…), and over Winter the condensation just from drying general laundry was ridiculous, so we made the reluctant decision to move back to disposables for a while.
But now it’s – theoretically – sunnier weather, the house is less condensation-covered, and the reusables can come out to play again!
And here are our favourites:
We’ve had these since the Wee Man was a tiny baby, and they’ve lasted over three years now. They’re birth to potty nappies and I love the ease of adjustment (using poppers) and the velcro fitting which means that they always fit well round the waist, even on the Wee Man and Bubby D who are little noodles! They come in a whole range of lovely bright patterns and colours which are great in the summer as Bubby D can run around in one with just a lightweight dress over the top. We have the bamboo inners in ours, which can take quite a long time to dry (up to two days inside, in the Winter!) but on the plus side they are extremely absorbent. I like these for their quick, easy use – no folding inserts or locating correct sized wraps required!
gNappies
These are a little more expensive than some other options, and they are also sized nappies which means you can’t get away with just buying a few and using them all the way through. However, they do fit brilliantly, and the velcro tabs do up on the back which is a bonus for me at the moment as Bubby D likes to have her nappy changed lying down on her front with her bottom wiggling in the air! They also come in sets with matching tops, so it looks like your little one isn’t even wearing a nappy at all as the nappies themselves are nice and slimline, and the patterns are really lovely. Plus, they’re a versatile in-between option for parents who like the idea of reusables but not the washing involved – as you can use them with disposable inserts instead of the washable inserts and liners.
Close Pop-In
These are a two part birth to potty nappy which we have in neutral pastel colours – great when Bubby D is wearing lightweight more ‘seethrough’ clothing or she’s dressed up a bit to go out (just like she was at the Great Diaper Change…).

The insert attaches using poppers so it’s nice and secure, and there is the option to add in an additional booster pad too for longer night-time use. The velcro fastening is nice and secure, and the length of the nappy is easily adjusted to fit larger or smaller babies using the three rows of poppers on the front. They’re nice and fast drying, so good for days when the sun isn’t quite so shiny.
These are a cotton pre-fold two part nappy, meaning that you can simply remove the inner prefold and re-use the outer wrap, in theory – although whenever there is a poo incident we definitely have to change the wrap too since it gets everywhere! They’re also sized nappies, which means you need to get different sized wraps as your baby grows (and we have found that the sizing given on the nappy is a bit on the generous size, as my two have outgrown them a bit before the weight indicated on the label), however this is reflected in the price as they’re quite a lot cheaper than some of the other nappy options out there. They use a velcro fastening, so as long as you have the right sized outer wrap for your baby they’re easy to adjust to fit well round the legs and the waist, and you shouldn’t get any leaking. They’re quick to dry and easy to fold. I do find they’re not absorbent enough to last through the night, but for daytime use they’re great 🙂
Oh, and we love our Bambino Mio swim nappy and training pants too – but that’s a whole other story!
