Cake and paint – a winning combination?

The Wee Man’s cousin is about to be Christened, and the Other Half has been asked to be Godparent. Clearly an opportunity for an appropriate gadget investigation session!

Trawling through the options, I hit upon the idea of visiting our local ceramics cafe – Creative Biscuit in South Woodford. It appears that basically, you turn up, choose something to paint, and then eat cake while painting it. I’m all for cake, and the Wee Man likes cake AND painting, so that’s sure to be a winning idea for him. Plus, we get a unique handmade gift for his cousin into the bargain.

After choosing an appropriate item to paint (a pig shaped money box) and a cake to eat (a fairy cake), the Wee Man sits down and chooses his paints from the large round plate with a selection of colours that has been placed in front of him on the table, along with a variety of brushes, sponges and other paint application implements. This is when I realise my major error – I didn’t bring anything to cover his clothes with. Or his hair, or his face. Or me, for that matter. The cafe proprietor does look a little alarmed as the Wee Man begins liberally swinging around a stick with a paint covered sponge on the end, managing in the process to get at least some of the paint on the pig.

An hour later, and we have a cake crumb and paint covered table and toddler, and a pig that actually looks rather good, considering its the work of a 21 month old (with just a little bit of help from Mummy). All in all a successful and enjoyable morning!
